  8. You know that you should back up the files on your computer to safeguard
  9. your data in the event of hardware or software failures.  But if you
  10. avoid doing backups, or only do them infrequently because they are such a
  11. pain in the neck, then FSave may be just what you're looking for.

  13. FSave is a program for DOS or Windows that simplifies the task of saving
  14. the files on your PC.  You specify which files must be saved, omitting any
  15. that can be reloaded from their original distribution diskettes, bulletin
  16. boards, or other sources.  This must be done only once, and you can use
  17. filename patterns and modification dates to identify files on a directory-
  18. by-directory basis. Once this is done, FSave backs up only the files you
  19. specified, and ignores the rest.  By saving only the files that cannot be
  20. recovered from other sources, FSave makes your periodic filesaves small,
  21. which means that they are fast and easy to do.  No special hardware or
  22. expensive media (e.g. tape drives or tapes) are needed.  I regularly back
  23. up my 170 Mb disk onto a single 1.44 Mb floppy, and it only takes a couple
  24. of minutes to do.

  26. By making filesaves fast and easy, FSave makes it more likely that you will
  27. do periodic filesaves more frequently.  If your hard disk bites the dust or
  28. you have lost data for any other reason, you will be eternally grateful
  29. that you have an up-to-date filesave.

  31. The shareware version of FSave is fully functional, and comes with the same
  32. extensive documentation included in the registered version.  It contains
  33. tutorial instructions as well as detailed descriptions of all the commands
  34. and options available.

  36. Note that FSave does not actually do the archiving itself -- it merely
  37. locates the files which should be saved, and then invokes your favorite
  38. archiving/compression program to do the real work.  Any compression program
  39. which can read a file to get a list of filenames to be saved can be used; I
  40. suggest that you begin with pkzip version 2.04g or later because that is
  41. what is shown in the tutorial examples.
